Our mission is to create better learning opportunities and facilities for underprivileged people, especially the young and our objective is to design and implement cost effective and safe learning environments.
There is a lack of educational resources in developing countries and regions. Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) together with motivated volunteers can help overcome this problem. Millions of children can neither read nor write, and other millions cannot use computers or Internet. In the age of the Internet, we have never had such cheap and easy access to so much information and so good opportunities to learn.
Learning to learn and learning to use information technology as a learning tool may be the single most important contributions to rural and poor populations of the 3rd and other parts of the world, to bridging the digital divide!
Schools and teachers are the bottlenecks in traditional education. It is hardly realistic to believe those bottlenecks can be overcome easily and without huge costs. It would require impossible efforts by poor nations whose privileged rather prefer to spend their money on the education of their own children. It would require international assistance of a magnitude totally unrealistic. Today’s marginal ad hoc educational efforts in the 3rd world will not likely take off into national or international large scale programs ever. There are no scale economies and it would therefore be forbiddingly expensive. That leaves the poor with but little hope unless new solutions are brought to bear, solutions combining new pedagogical thinking with modern technology and building on the natural instinct and will to learn of people especially the young. This is where ICT and e-learning may have a major impact, in elevating the marginalized poor to levels of knowledge allowing them to be integrated into the society of the privileged and productive sections of the population.
Our learning center is based on the ideas of self-paced and problem based learning with the help their own friends/peers, volunteers and computers /Internet. A learning friendly environment where all stay and help each other, very cost effective, cheap to run and operate!
OpenmindProjects was in 2008 invited as a finalist to the Stockholm Challenge ICT for Development, recognized by UNESCO for its IT learning initiative and is recommended by CNN-Be the change. Read more
Over the years we have had and seen many a poor young person join us, who did not speak any English, never touched a computer who now helps us train incoming overseas volunteers and later going on better jobs and/or helping their villages, friends, families back home.
