Fascinating opportunity to help train future Lao teachers! Wittayalai Kru Ban Keun Teacher College Age 17 – 22 years Vientiane Province, Laos Ban Keun Teacher College is one of eight teachers colleges in Laos. Situated about 1½ hours outside Vientiane by minibus, the school has 4 student buildings and one staff office. They offer free rooms for students, though they’re usually crowded. Some students rent houses with 5-6 students per room, 5-6 rooms, and only one bathroom. The students come mostly from towns and villages nearby, though some come from farther away. They study for 2-3 years. During the last year they practice teaching for three months at a school. They have a new computer room with internet and students learn to send emails and search the internet. There is a Thai -Lao Cooperation library, partially because they previously had some support from Thailand. Volunteers can stay with Phouthachan’s family, the English teacher who speaks good English. He works as a Foreign Relation Officer in the college. Population of the town: Around 1,700 Students: 3,000 Teachers: 112. Phouthachan is an English teacher and also our contact person.
