Train
Take the train to Nongkhai from Bangkok, night or daytime. Make sure you buy a ticket at the train station in advance if you want a second class, A/C, seat or bed. It costs about 500 Baht one way. There are trains for Nongkhai from Hua Lampong train station in central Bangkok. Two trains depart from Bangkok every evening at around 7.00pm and another at 8:20 in the morning. The train to Nongkhai is the Northeastern line.
Once on the train you will go to the very end station, Nong Khai! It takes about 10 or 11 hours.
Bus
Take a day or night A/C bus from the Mochit Bus Station or from Khaosan Rd. Make a reservation at any travel agency or at your guesthouse. They can normally pick you up at your guesthouse. Prices vary between 350 - 500 Baht, one way, about 8 hours. There are several bus companies driving daily from Bangkok to Nongkhai. Many buses leave in the evening and arrive in Nongkhai early in the morning.
Fly
You can fly to Udon Thani from Bangkok, a one-hour flight. Then take a bus or limousine from the airport to Nongkhai, 45 minutes, 100 Baht. There are three daily Thai Air flights at 6:50, 12:50 and 18:15 from Bangkok to Udon Thani. You can book a flight online or fly Air Asia: http://www.airasia.com or Nok air: http://www.nokair.com, two new budget airlines.
