2010 Holiday Camps in Thailand.

OpenmindProjects arranges and supports holiday camps for school children in Thailand. There is always an emphasis on learning English but not in the classroom but with lots of games, role-plays, songs, maybe excursions. Always ‘Sanook’, Thai for fun.

OpenmindProjects has supported and supports camps in different parts of Thailand, some examples:

About Cross Culture, Eco and English Camps in northeast Thailand

Students and volunteers may learn Thai culture, dancing, Thai boxing, sword fighting. Volunteers teach English and students study other subjects with local teachers. Volunteers and local staff stay at the camp site. Volunteers get a true immersion into Thai northeast culture. Volunteers can go wild elephant trekking in Phu Wua, not far away in their free time.

About the Krabi English Camps in Krabi town

Students of all ages have learnt English with OpenmindProjects staff and volunteers. Volunteers mainly teach English but can agree with local camp leaders to join other activities too. Most volunteers stay at the Openmind House in Krabi. Volunteers are supported by our Krabi manager, Mui, who is a well known media profile in Krabi since she also helps run a local radio station. Volunteers are often invited to programs. Volunteers can go to the Ao Nang and other beaches, not far away in their free time.

About the Prachuap Kiri Khan Junior Tour Guide Camp

The Prachuap Kiri Khan Camp was a 10 day English camp from 18-27 April, 2010. The aim is to help secondary students to become local tour guides. The volunteers teach English in a free style with a focus on communication, and outdoor activities held at the beach area in Ban Krut.

October 2010 English, Eco and Cross Culture Exchange Camp in NongKhai, Thailand, teach English and learn to understand local culture

Take part in an English camp program for Thai children and students in NongKhai by the Mekong River. This October Cross Culture and English camp is an exciting way to help and encourage Thai children to learn and practice English, meet people from other countries and learn eco friendly behavior. The children come from poor village schools in northeast Thailand, Isan.

volunteer oversea teaching training Working with a group of other volunteers and our staff, your role will be to teach English, computer skills and take part in cross culture and other activities. The camps involve much fun and interaction including games, role-plays, sports, songs, art and other creative activities.

There is also an opportunity to explore the special northeast Thailand, Isan and Lao cultures and the Thai children are very keen to share some of their skills and traditions. NongKhai is a fascinating mix of Indochinese peoples and cultures, Thai, Isan, Lao, Mong, Vietnamese and Chinese being the major ethnic groups represented. It offers stunning excursions along the Mekong to eco projects with elephant trekking and into nearby Laos where some of the children come from. It is an off the beaten tracks destination but there is a lively local social scene and close to backpacker popular Laos.

openmindprojects volunteer handbookBefore arrival you get a detailed online information booklet, travel assistance. You have accommodation at our Training and Camp Center and on arrival a 3 day intense Thai language & culture training, support from our local staff and Thai and solar cooking opportunities during the camp OpenmindProjects provides guidance, ideas and resources for the volunteer groups to run and manage camp together with some of our local staff.

The camp days themselves start at about 9 am and finish around 4 pm.

During the week ends there is time off to rest and prepare or to travel and explore, and at the end there will be a diploma party with volunteers and students and the parents from villages who can come. One week end you will explore the Mekong River valley and go wild elephant trekking in Phu Wua Mountains (included in the fee) , visit Laos, maybe practice Muai Thai (boxing at a camp for young Thai boxers). You will live at the center or with a Thai teacher family.

For young Thai and Lao people, better English means better job opportunities. Our English camps are a fun and interactive way of motivating and helping the children to learn.

We focus on:

Social responsibility - before volunteers depart us provide them with a detailed online volunteer information pack. On arrival we provide an intense Volunteer, Teach English and Thai language and cultural training. Our volunteer training is activity based much as the camp work will be too in and volunteers are helped to understand and respect the local cultures and customs.

Economic responsibility – No part of the fee is spent overseas! The full fee that volunteers pay is spent in Thailand, to support our many field projects and Thai staff who support our volunteers. While volunteers are in-country, we encourage them to buy locally and support local businesses. No need to bring many clothes buys them cheap in Thailand.

Environmental responsibility – Our volunteers and staff and camp students are engaged in discussion and are encouraged to discuss and learn simple steps to protect the local environment.
