Erin McGraw from USA.
I came to Thailand to get out of my comfort zone, but I'll be the first to admit that I felt quite at home.

International Volunteer Information. Discover Southwest Thailand

The Southwest Thailand

Phang-Nga ProvinceVolunteer abroad in Southwest Thailand. Teach English and eco-tourism.
Just north of Phuket is a land of tin mines and very beautiful scenery, soaring mountains and pristine beaches, evergreen forests and mangroves. Pang Nga was the Thai province that suffered most from the Tsunami and where we help many schools.
Travel Modes:

Satun Province
Volunteer abroad in Southwest Thailand. Teach English and eco-tourism.Bordering Malaysia with its lush jungles, white beaches, magnificent archipelago and a delicious Thai/Malay cuisine, Satun is a spectacularly beautiful, small and peaceful province in the Southwest. Openmindprojects has projects in Satun town, on the charming and beautiful Koh Sarai island, just outside the mangrove archipelago, where fishermen/farmers live, and in a small jungle village an hour's drive outside Satun.
Satun is a charming small, Thai Malay style town with a mix of Muslims and Buddhists living together, mosques and temples side by side. From Satun it is easy to take a ferry to Malaysia and the popular Langkawi Island. The Sakais is a nomad jungle tribe in the deep mountain jungles in Satun province and elsewhere too. They hunt, mainly monkeys, for their survival. Poison darts are their weapons. The Sakai live in very simple shelters made from palm leaves and covered with banana leaves. The shelters will be abandoned after a time due to lack of food supply, or when they make the decision that life is no longer safe there. Some Sakai can speak the southern Thai dialect. Most of them cannot write, or go to school.

Phuket IslandVolunteer abroad in Southwest Thailand. Teach English and eco-tourism.
is a beautiful but heavily exploited island in the Andaman Sea. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Asia! Since the early 1980's the tourist business is Phuket's chief source of income. Hotels, restaurants, tour companies, dive and souvenir shops are much in evidence on the west coast. Agriculture is also important to a large number of people and covers by far the largest portion of the island. Principal crops are rubber, coconuts, cashews, and pineapples. Prawn farming has largely taken over the east and south coasts. Pearl farming is also important. Phuket's fishing port is at all times filled. Processing of marine products, mainly fish, makes a significant contribution to the economy. The Patong and Kamala beaches were severely hit by the Tsunami and we have a special social rehabilitation project in Patong.
Travel Modes: One can travel via Bangkok-Phuket by air or bus.

Krabi ProvinceVolunteer abroad in Southwest Thailand. Teach English and eco-tourism.
A seaside province located in the Andaman Sea, east of Phuket. The province is full of white sandy beaches, crystal clear seawater, beautiful islands, verdant forest with caves, and waterfalls, including more than 100 offshore islands, mountains, hills, plains, and mangrove forests. Krabi town has a long river, which flows through town and ends at the Andaman Sea. The Rileigh Beach is very popular with backpackers.
Some places in Krabi suffered much from the Tsunami and we help schools and eco projects here.
Travel Modes:
Daily Bangkok-Krabi bus service, Buses leave Bangkok at the Southern Bus
You can fly from Bangkok to Krabi too.
