Ecotourism and Wildlife Conservation in Thailand and Laos

Support Community Based and Sustainable Ecotourism Projects |
Responsible and sustainable Ecotourism is a means to help national parks, villages and other places to protect the environment. Sustainable Ecotourism avoids damage to the environment caused by tourism and involves the local population and provides them with an alternative source of income.

How to Support Community Based and Sustainable Ecotourism in
Thailand and Laos |
OpenmindProjects Eco volunteers go to national parks and villages to teach English, develop Ecotourism information and services, explain Ecotourism to local people and assess their training needs so they can gain a larger share of the Ecotourism revenue generated. Today most of the revenue stays with travel agencies and tour operators.
The qualified Eco volunteer can also participate in wildlife surveys.
Another responsibility of the Eco volunteer is to participate in environmental education - to make people aware of today’s threats to the environment: climate change, wildlife issues, illegal trade in wildlife, hardwood and orchids etc.
The Eco volunteer also helps local people understand the opportunities and benefits of Eco tourism.
Eco volunteers involve the local population in Ecotourism projects. They help develop Ecotourism projects to benefit the local community by using local resources in accommodation, transport, guiding, food etc. The most important task of an Eco volunteer is often to teach English.

Current Eco Projects in Thailand and Laos that OpenmindProjects support and where volunteers are welcome. |
Kui Buri, a national park in Western Thailand with an amazing wildlife, in the mountains bordering on Burma. An elephant protection and local eco tourism project. The best place to see wild elephants in Thailand. Volunteers work with national park staff and a village with a group of female park guides. The park wildlife includes tigers, gaurs, tapirs, leopards, and other endangered species.
Tai Muang Marine National Park, in South Thailand, north of Phukhet, with a saving the sea turtles and their beach project. Volunteers teach Englisish, creat English information material. Sometimes which volunteers with diving experience are invited to participate in marine wild life surveys. The Tai Muang beach is the last beach in Thailand where the highly endangered giant leatherback turtles lay their eggs. However, commercial interests now threaten this beach too.
Phu Wua Wildlife Reserve, in the northeast Thailand, close to the Mekong River, an eco tourism project, combination of culture/home stay, mountain and wild elephant trekking. Volunteers may also work with local schools.
Phou Khao Khouai, the Water Buffalo Mountains in Laos, a national park about 90 minutes from Vientiane, the capitol of Laos.
Visit www.trekkingcentrallaos.com, a website made by OpenmindProjects volunteers. This is where volunteers will trek with rangers and get a chance to stay overnight in the elephant watch tower!
Pakes, Xe Pian, South Laos. Volunteer in Pakse town or in villages deep inside the Lao jungles. A Lao Eco tourism project, implemented by WWF in cooperation with the Lao National Tourism Administration and OpenmindProjects. At least 13 globally threatened mammals have been found in Xe Pian. Local people in the jungle even claim they have seen rhinos. This project started in April 2007, and works with five villages, administered from Pakse town.
New eco projects are under way in Thailand, Laos and Nepal.

Why does Openmindprojects support Eco Tourism and Wildlife Conservation in Thailand and Laos? |
Natural resources of ecological importance are highly threatened in all of South East Asia, due to legal and illegal logging, poaching and exploitation of habitat for mass tourism and other purposes. Responsible, community based and sustainable ecotourism is a means to help protect the environment and to help local people to earn an income from aliving nature.
The Eco Volunteer and OpenmindProjects role in eco tourism and wildlife conservation projects |
We send eco volunteers to National Parks and villages to explain the opportunities of eco tourism, the importance to protect wildlife and environment and to train park staff and local villagers to take care of eco tourists. Eco Volunteers teach English, help develop eco tourism information and services, trekking packages, design websites. Eco Volunteers may participate in wildlife survey work on land and in the sea.
Who are the eco tourists? |
Eco tourists want to go see wildlife, enjoy nature, meet local people, learn about their lives and culture. Many eco tourists are interested in sport activities and trekking. Some eco tourists want to support wildlife conservation. Eco Tourists are willing to pay more for a genuine eco tourist package which benefits the sustainability of the destination, people, nature and culture

Our Dutch eco volunteers Karin and Astrid made a website for a Lao project www.trekkingcentrallaos.com featuring amongst other amazing Elephant Trekking in Laos! Visit a Lao village! Spend a night in an elephant tower waiting for wild elephants! No, it is not Africa! It is Laos!
Excerpt from a leaflet made by our Czeck and English volunteers Barbora and Andy:
Home stay with local villagers
Phu Wua Wildlife Sanctuary in the northernmost part of North-east Thailand, near the border with Laos was created in 1975, and ever since then, has protected the forests, rocks and animals of one of the most beautiful areas of Thailand. An ideal destination for trekking trips into the wilderness and visitors also have a chance to see wild elephants in their natural environment. There is a Home-stay project in the nearby village of Kham Pia. Here, tourists can stay overnight with a local family and gain an insight into the lives of Thai villagers. Click here to read their leaflet for backpackers Our australian volunteer Wayne made a website for the Phu Wua project visit http://thailandwildelephanttrekking.com
