Teach English in Thailand. Teach English as a foreign language, TEFL, TESL.

Teach English in Thailand, make English the most popular subject!  A great way for the international volunteer to learn to teach and improve his/her communication skills.

Who do volunteers teach English to?

Children and teenagers at schools, adults in national parks and villages. Some volunteers teach English to teachers. Many Thai and Lao teachers don’t speak English yet they teach English and need help.

What English do volunteers teach?

- Speaking, listening, writing
- Simple vocabulary, simple sentences like greetings, colors, the Alphabet, numbers, time,
  directions
- Very basic grammar

How do volunteers teach English in Thailand and Laos?

With games, songs, role  plays, with Thai teachers, in a classroom, outside, after school, an English club. Some creative volunteers make inexpensive and fun English material for poor schools.
English is best learnt when practiced. Our international volunteers teach English by practicing 'Listen and Speak' in and outside the classroom. They teach English by going to the market, walking around town, going shopping, using computers, CD ROM’s. They talk about their home country, show pictures, talk about daily activities, the family, the farm, the village. Teach English in Thailand in a fun and creative way!
You can teach English together with another volunteer or with a Thai teacher, which we recommend, though some teachers prefer the volunteer to teach alone.

The best results are achieved when volunteers teach English together with Thai teachers. Read what a volunteer says about team teaching:
Adjan Newpoon makes extremely good use of me as a native speaker of English, in listening exercises and to help students with pronunciation.
I read a short paragraph, introducing myself. Such as: My name is Marc Johnson. I am 27 years old and come from Holland. My hobbies are snow boarding, traveling, computers and listening to rock music.
I read this slowly two or three times, and then I ask true or false questions such as: My surname is Marc; I come from England; I have two sisters etc.
These lessons would not be possible without the help of a Thai teacher to explain things, check understanding in Thai, as well as English, and of course keep the class in order! We hold a planning meeting each week, to review what we have covered, and the lesson plans for the coming week.

Where do volunteers teach English with OpenmindProjects?

In over 60 projects in Thailand and Laos. From the North to the South. Young novices at Buddhist Temples, tsunami victims in the South, orphan homes, homes for children with AIDS, preschools, primary and secondary schools, school camps.  International volunteers also teach English in our Eco tourism and wildlife conservation projects. We will give you a long list to choose from once you have applied.

When can volunteers teach English?

All year round

Does the volunteer need to be a teacher?

No. Less experienced volunteers are also welcome. All volunteers get an online Pre Departure Handbook with travel, Thailand and teach information and all volunteers are welcome to our free 3 day Volunteer Training in Thailand before they start volunteering. Volunteers learn useful Thai vocabulary, practice teaching, computers,  to teach English. They get country and culture information and they learn to go shopping and cooking. Volunteers also get a CD ROM with Thai language, volunteer and teach English information that they can bring to their placement.
